Tactical and Rescue Gloves
Tactical gloves have to do several jobs at once. They must survive forced entry and vehicle extrication, resist blades and sharps found during searches, tolerate heat and flame, and still allow an operator to work a radio, a torch, a buckle or a weapon without taking the glove off.
Cut and puncture protection
Cut and puncture are rated separately under EN 388, and for this work both matter. Cut resistance comes from the liner and is reported as the TDM letter in position five. Levels C to E cover glass, sheet metal and blade contact during extrication and search work.
Puncture is position four, rated 1 to 4, and is tested with a blunt stylus. That test does not represent a hypodermic needle, which is a far finer point, so a high puncture digit should not be read as needlestick protection. Where needles are a realistic risk during searches, that hazard needs a dedicated needle resistant material and a search procedure using tools rather than fingers.
Flame resistance
Flame performance is reported under EN 407, where position one records burning behaviour and positions two to four record contact, convective and radiant heat. For tactical use the important property is that the glove does not melt and adhere to skin, which rules out unprotected nylon and polyester on exposed surfaces.
Aramid liners and leather palms both self extinguish and char rather than melting, which is why they dominate this category. Read the EN 407 code rather than assuming a glove described as tactical is flame resistant, because many are not tested at all.
Knuckle protection
Moulded knuckle guards protect the back of the hand during forced entry, restraint and vehicle work. Hard shells spread a strike over the widest area, while segmented thermoplastic rubber flexes more freely and is quieter, which matters when noise discipline is part of the task.
The guard must be shaped so the hand can still close fully into a fist and so the glove can be donned quickly. A pad that fights the knuckles when the hand closes will be worked loose within weeks.
Equipment dexterity and fit
Dexterity is graded 1 to 5 under EN ISO 21420, measured by the smallest pin diameter an operator can pick up while gloved. For tactical work, level 4 or 5 is the practical minimum, because the glove has to allow buckles, carabiners, radios and torches to be operated first time.
Fit is the other half of dexterity. A tactical glove should follow the natural curl of the hand at rest, with pre curved fingers and no loose material in the palm. Excess length at the fingertip is the single most common reason a glove fails at a fine task. Check the wrist closure as well. A hook and loop strap lets the glove be cinched over or under a sleeve and pulled off quickly, and a glove that cannot be removed fast is a liability during a casualty handover.
Finally, buy for the task mix. A single glove that is heavy enough for extrication will be too bulky for extended equipment handling, so many teams issue a light glove for routine duty and a reinforced glove for entry and rescue tasks.
