The three EN 511 digits

EN 511 prints three characters under the snowflake pictogram. Position one is resistance to convective cold, rated 0 to 4, derived from the thermal insulation of the whole glove measured on a heated hand model in moving air. This is the figure that matters when you are standing in cold air.

Position two is resistance to contact cold, also rated 0 to 4, measured as the thermal resistance of the material when it is held against a cold surface. This is the figure that matters when you are gripping frozen steel or a chilled rail. A glove can rate well on one and poorly on the other, because loft insulates against air while dense material insulates against contact.

Position three is water permeability and is only ever 0 or 1. A 1 means no water penetrated the glove within 30 minutes of testing. A 0 means water got through, which does not make the glove useless but does mean it is not a wet weather glove.

Cold storage against outdoor cold

Cold storage is stable, dry and usually between minus 18 and plus 4 degrees Celsius, with constant contact against chilled cartons, racking and frozen product. Contact cold performance and a snug fit matter more than bulk, because pickers handle stock continuously and lose dexterity faster than they lose warmth.

Outdoor cold is variable, often wet and usually windy. Here convective cold performance and the water permeability digit carry the weight, along with a cuff that seals against a sleeve so wind cannot flush warm air out of the glove.

Waterproof membranes and why they matter

A wet glove loses most of its insulating value, because water conducts heat away from the hand far faster than trapped air. That is why the water permeability digit is worth more in practice than an extra level of insulation.

A membrane laminated between the shell and the liner blocks liquid water from outside while allowing water vapour from sweat to escape. Without that vapour path the hand wets out from the inside and ends up just as cold. A membrane only works if the glove is otherwise sealed, so check the cuff closure and the seam construction, not just the marketing claim.

The insulation and dexterity trade off

Warmth comes from trapped air, and trapped air needs thickness. There is no way around that, so every extra degree of warmth costs you feel. A thick insulated mitt keeps hands warm for hours and makes it impossible to pick up a fastener.

The honest approach is to match the glove to the task duration. For continuous handling in a chiller, choose a thinner lined glove with good contact cold performance and plan warming breaks. For static outdoor work such as gate duty or plant watching, choose maximum insulation because dexterity is not being used. Where a task alternates, a warm outer glove over a thin liner lets the worker strip back for the fine part of the job without exposing bare skin.

Fit also drives warmth. A glove pulled tight over the fingers compresses the insulation and cuts off circulation, so a cold weather glove should be sized slightly looser than a summer handling glove.
